Gettin’ Married
I’ll be out of town the next two weeks, as I’m getting married and going on my honeymoon. Please forgive me if I’m a little slow to post. I’ll be back soon!

DMO Galleries Welcomes Guest Photoblogger John Caruso
[Editor's note--this is a continuing series featuring Chicago photobloggers. I am happy to hand today's post over to talented Chicago photographer John Caruso. I hope you'll enjoy John's words and photos and check out his website at www.carusophoto.com.]
Photographing in Chicago–a city overflowing with sights, subjects, and scenes–can simultaneously be a treasure trove and a daunting experience. Plop yourself down on any street corner and you could spend an hour exposing rolls of film or filling up memory cards simply by looking up, looking down, and turning around. There is so much to see, so much to photograph. But by the same token, there is SO MUCH TO SEE, and SO MUCH TO PHOTOGRAPH that it can be difficult to narrow down one’s focus.
When shooting in the city, I’ve found that my photo walk tend to fall into two categories: “big & bold” and “small & intimate.” Skyscrapers, bustling traffic, and sweeping cityscapes call out to us, compelling us to put camera to eye. Impressive shows of strength, grandeur, and accomplishment are natural photographic subjects. But the small details of city living–a crack in the cement, a rusted girder, an alley door–are compelling subjects in their own right. They give us a chance to explore those tiny moments that, when added up, create the continuum of our every
day lives. Happily, living in the city, we have the opportunity to embrace all these subjects.

Living Inside The Daily Photo
For me, the main challenge is to create something different from the same streets, roads and sidewalks I pass everyday. Chicago is huge so I’m happy when I get to go outside of the usual. It’s good if the details tell a small story about the city. I like street photos best of all–things happen so I’m always trying to learn how to see and where to look. I also like that a picture can be about a feeling I might have.
Sometimes it’s hard when nothing seems to be going on and I’ll try to take a picture of this ‘nothingness’ whatever it might be. I think even these pictures have stories inside of them.
[Thanks, B.C. -DMO]
